Elvira Arellano Has Been Living With Son Saul In Church For Months

(CBS) CHICAGO A little boy whose mother is fighting deportation is back in Washington, D.C. to plead his mother’s case.

Saul Arellano, 7, hopes to keep his mother, Elviria Arellano in the country. Elvira Arellano is an undocumented immigrant, but her son was born in the United States and is a citizen.

Elvira came to the United States illegally nearly a decade ago. She and Saul have lived at the Adalberto United Methodist Church in the Humboldt Park neighborhood since mid-August to avoid her deportation.

Last month, Saul visited the White House with U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez. He gave a staffer a handwritten letter in which he asked President Bush to allow his mother to stay in the United States.

The obvious, of course, is to reply with deporting illegal alien mom. But will it happen, of course not - too politically incorrect.

What a great message it would send to ALL illegals in our country. The Church can't hide you. You can run, but you can't hide.

Hey, that should be the motto of the gov's illegal alien crackdown -"You Can Run, But You Can't Hide."

i'M SICK AND TIRED of all this crap...born in this country of illegal parents doesn't constitute citizenship...it says under the juristiction ...this is citizens....how can they be under our juristiction when their parents are allowed to send their votes back to mexico...that's where their aledgence is....they are using kids to get benenfits...to break the laws and set up agencies like children and family services to hide the mis-use of tax-payers funds...why should a kid get food stamps...why aren't they being fed by their parents ...American families have to qualify for food stamps not the kids...
time America wakes up, looses some of this mis-placed compassion and demands no benefits--no welfare---no jobs----no amnesty........drop the Political Correctness and kiss off the accusations of racism ...used to silence people who differ in opinion and who are winning an argument....those who fall for this are....Policial Cowards

WASHINGTON -- The young son of a woman who has taken refuge in a Chicago church delivered a letter to the White House on Tuesday, hoping to enlist President Bush's help in keeping his mother from being deported to Mexico.

The handwritten letter, which 7-year-old Saul Arellano gave to a White House staffer outside the gates, requested a meeting with Bush to discuss allowing Elvira Arellano to stay in the United States, said Robert Lopez, spokesman for Chicago immigration-rights group Centro Sin Fronteras.

''He was serious about getting this done and making sure he delivered this letter for his mother,'' Lopez said.

Saul Arellano, who is an American citizen, appeared with U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez at a meeting of the Hispanic Congressional Caucus Institute earlier Tuesday, then went to the White House with the Chicago Democrat and members of Centro Sin Fronteras.

The boy traveled to Washington with Emma Lozano, executive director of the group, and was scheduled to return Wednesday, Lopez said.

On Aug. 15, Elvira Arellano was supposed to surrender to federal authorities for deportation. Instead, she sought refuge at the Adalberto United Methodist Church in a heavily Latino neighborhood.

On Friday, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the pastor of the church on Saul's behalf, which contended the boy's rights would be violated if his mother was deported.
