Resolution would require immigration checks after felony arrests

Associated Press - May 16, 2007 12:25 AM ET

A Tulsa city councilor has proposed a resolution that would require police to verify the immigration status of anyone arrested on a felony complaint.

Councilor John Eagleton made the recommendation at the City Council meeting today, and it will be up for discussion during the council's committee meetings next week.

Eagleton says anyone arrested and found to be in the country illegally should be held as a fugitive while federal immigration officials are alerted.

Eagleton says he wants to target illegal immigrants who are going to jail anyway. He doesn't advocate checks on people who are being given traffic tickets or who report a crime.

Undersheriff Brian Edwards says Tulsa County already checks the immigration status of people booked into the Tulsa Jail on felony complaints.
