SC agency finds 35 illegal workers at school sites
SC agency finds 35 illegal workers at school sites
Associated Press - August 27, 2010 5:15 PM ET
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Five companies have been cited for employing illegal immigrants at school construction sites in a South Carolina county.
The state agency overseeing South Carolina's illegal immigration law reported Friday it has found 35 illegal workers at five construction sites in Pickens County. Officials say they expect to identify more as the investigation continues.
Jim Knight with the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation says all 35 were fired, and only one company has been fined. A concrete company was fined $850 after a second inspection found it still wasn't complying.
Under the law, fines are waived for first-time violators who quickly correct the problem.
Superintendent Henry Hunt says district officials are upset at the general contractors.

They need to clean house on these employers in N Carolina . That is ALL you see on any job site anymore around here. MY bet would be that most are ILLEGALS. I know damn well Americans worked these jobs before they were overrun.

More Undocumented Workers Found at Local School's Construction Site

More than three dozen illegal immigrants have been found, working at school construction sites in the upstate.
Now five companies are being cited.
Twenty one undocumented workers were found working for Cherokee Masonry, five with Land Construction, five with Rangel Masonry, three with Kent Companies and one with B&B Plumbing.
According to South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, 35 undocumented workers were found, then fired from working on the Pickens County School District's new construction sites.
Margaret Thompson lives in the area and says she's been keeping a close eye on the construction of the new schools in Pickens County. "I'm a tax payer my tax payer money is going to these schools and they need to do it right, and these contractors need to hire legal American citizens, it doesn't matter where they're from but they need to be legal."
Officials with the Pickens County School District say they're taking these violations seriously. Adding that illegal workers may have been let go but that may not be enough.
Superintendent Dr. Henry Hunt says the school has been assured by their construction managers that they're playing by the book. He says if they find that not to be true, it's on to the next step. "If our expectations are not met then we will be talking to our attorneys about steps we would take to replace those sub-contractors."
Jim Knight with LLR says this investigation may take a few weeks to wrap up, but surprise visits are far from over. "We're not going away. We will continue to go back again and again as complaints come in alleging that unauthorized workers are working on sites. Our message to contractors is that this law is in place and is enforced and will be enforced."

I agree! My question is: with all the road work being done ( and with TARP funds I believe) these are supposed to be "recovery" jobs... why is it 9 out of 10 of the workers on these road crews are Hispanic? Before I came North in early summer/ late spring, I crossed NC from KY to mid-State and then from mid-State to the VA line and I just got madder and madder at how Gov. Perdue is using recovery funds to keep her beloved illegals in jobs Americans need!
Gov Perdue needs to be kicked out as well. She is running this state into more debt. While you are at it,kick me,because I voted for her. (OOOOPS) What a MISTAKE I MADE!"When you have knowledge, you have a responsibility to do better"_ Paula Johnson

We need to have stricter laws for companies who hire illegels. IMO anyone who hires an illegel over an American is not a very loyal American. They are not helping with a soulation.......they are part of the problem!
If employers would stop hiring illegals ,and hire Americans our ecomey would pick up and unemployment would go down!!
Why should illegals leave when they have it better than US citizens!!! I can imagine all the other countries laughimg at how our goverment bends over backward to please illegal criminals!!!
This goverment has made the USA the laughing stock of the world. There is not another country in the world that would allow illegals to come into their country and take over the way our goverment has allowed these criminals to do.

Ironically, this report comes exactly 5 years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, and parts of Mississippi.
Shortly after the natural disaster, construction crews hired local American residents, mainly of African-American descent, who were eager to rebuild their city. But after a short period of work, they were all excused by the construction foremen. The foremen thanked them for their efforts, and hired a whole new crop of workers, who were most probably illegal aliens. My guess is that these new workers were willing to work for lower wages. But the original local workers were literally in tears after learning that they no longer had the chance to rebuild their own communities. And to add insult to injury, they joined the unemployment rolls.
This was around the same period of time when Congress was considering the first Amnesty attempt in May 2006. Senator Ted Kennedy called it "the Civil Rights Movement of our time". What an insult. African-Americans had rightfully earned their civil rights some decades earlier, but construction foremen freely replaced these workers.
But now, Labor Day is almost here. Support the American worker. Support legality. Support and promote America.
