Dozens Of Inmates To Be Deported
    Immigration Officials Crackdown On Prisoners

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A three-week long review of records at an Upstate prison will lead to the deportation of dozens of inmates.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials identified dozens of inmates at the Greenville County Detention Center who are subject to deportation, according to the detention center director.

The review of records is part of an ongoing illegal immigration crackdown by federal authorities.

Catching illegal immigrants isn't easy for local law enforcement.

Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis said, "A lot of citizens throughout the county still are not aware or don't understand that that my deputies cannot enforce federal law regarding immigration and illegal immigrants."

When deputies arrest someone that they believe might be an illegal immigrant, they rely on federal officials to deal with it.

"We go ahead with our criminal charges, place them in jail and then notify Immigration and Customs," Loftis said.

ICE screened the immigration status of every single Greenville inmate -- more that 2,000 of them -- and found about 150 that will be subject to deportation.

Scotty Bodiford, Greenville County detention center director, said, "We will continue to screen all inmates booked into the jail for legal status and any that's identified as being here illegally will be reported to immigration and customs enforcement."

Bodiford said he would like to apply for the federal program called 287-G. It provides training and access to databases that can help determine if someone who has been arrested is an illegal immigrant.

"Once that does materialize, then my plans are hopefully being able to get some deputies trained to work with detention to make that a good working relationship," Bodiford said.

Of the 150 inmates identified as illegal, 40 have already been removed for deportation.

ICE will deport the remaining inmates after each goes through the criminal justice system.

"You know, that's a few less criminals that we will have to worry about once these people are actually deported,"

Most have felony crimes. Could be that some of the misdemeanors are combined with the felony charges.

I still think that the US should make a deal with some very oppressive government, where we prop up their prison system and they take some of our deportees. Oh yeah, I forgot the ineptness of this administration's foreigh policy, which seems to have the entire world mad at this admin.
