SC-No Money For Approved Hotline on Immigration Crackdown

No Money For Approved Hotline on Immigration Crackdown
    Read Comments (5)

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina agency says it doesn't have the money to start a hotline and database for an immigration crackdown approved last year.

The Greenville News reported Monday that the Commission on Minority Affairs was supposed to operate a hotline to accept complaints about illegal immigrants. The plan also calls for a database to help track immigration information received by state agencies.

Commission executive director Janie Davis says the agency doesn't have the $287,000 needed to start the programs. Davis says she doesn't have the $261,000 to operate the system, either.

State Sen. Larry Martin of Pickens says the hotline and database are considered extras that would be funded if possible

Make it a 900 number that is better than not having one.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

$287,287 to get hotline, database started left out of budget

COLUMBIA — A hotline and database called for in last year's huge immigration reform law has yet to start because the agency assigned to do the work hasn't been given the money.

Janie Davis, executive director for the state Commission on Minority Affairs, said the agency was supposed to operate a hotline to accept complaints and information about illegal immigrants. The database was supposed to help track immigration information received by all state agencies.

But she said without the $287,287 needed for startup costs, the agency can't begin the work.

“That part of the law was to be implemented should the funding be made available and, unfortunately, given all the budget cuts, there has been no funding provided for that,â€
