SC re-elects US Sen. Lindsey Graham

    Posted: Nov 4, 2008 05:05 PM MST

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) - U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham is returning to Washington after easily sweeping to a second term over a little-known Democratic challenger.

The Associated Press called the race for the Republican incumbent shortly after polls closed Tuesday night.

The call was based on an analysis of voter interviews, conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.

The re-election shows Graham overcame Republican misgivings about his role in failed immigration legislation. The senator spent most of his campaign on the road with John McCain and spent Election Day in Arizona.

Challenger Bob Conley was a newcomer to state politics and the Democratic Party. He tried to run to the right of Graham and did not curry favor from state Democrats.

Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country.

I remember reading where a Democratic official in S.C. told a reporter, "We couldn't find a better Democrat than Lindsay Graham. We're well pleased with his representation." So I guess the S.C. Democratic Party wouldn't really have gotten behind any challenger.

I am surprised they didn't just go ahead and tell us how many votes he got.

Fox just showed Graham checked as a winner, even though Conley had more votes so far.

This AP map has Graham marked as the winner, with 46.8% of the vote, to COnley's 53.2%. http://hosted.ap.org/specials/election_ ... E=MASPDELN

This whole thing has gotten down right scary! Everything reeks of corruption!

So the Associated Press has called the SC race before any poll results are avail? That is insane.

Whether Graham wins or loses, it should not be the Associated Press announcing the results from their own polls. It should be from the board of elections.

There are still only 12% of SC's precincts reporting in.
