School Board Passes Resolution Denouncing AZ Law

School Board Passes Resolution Denouncing AZ Law

    POSTED: 5:22 pm PDT May 11, 2010
    UPDATED: 7:56 pm PDT May 11, 2010

SAN DIEGO -- In a 5-0 vote, the San Diego Unified School District School Board passed a resolution denouncing Arizona's recently passed immigration law.

However, 10News learned a separate resolution regarding a travel warning for district students and families was dropped by the board.

According to 10News' Allison Ash, the resolution that was passed includes a travel restriction that applies to school district officials and administrators.

The resolution also called on members of Congress to develop a firm policy regarding immigration.

The school board allowed public comments on the resolution in a Tuesday evening meeting, with several pro-immigration groups voicing their opinion on the matter. Members of the Southern California Patriot Coalition, who are strongly in favor of the Arizona law, also spoke at the meeting.

Lincoln High School teacher Guillermo Gomez said, "I think it's very important for educators to take a stand when social injustices arise."

Gomez teaches social justice at Lincoln High and comes from an immigrant family. He said he commends School Board President Richard Barrera for bringing the resolution forward because he believes what Arizona is doing is wrong.

"I don't think its white against brown or black against brown; I think this is an attack against humanity," said Gomez.

ACLU Field and Policy Directory Andrea Guerrero said, "It's incredibly concerning to me as a parent to know that I think that we're slipping backwards. To know that one state over several hours away there is a political body that sees fit to enact modern-day Jim Crow Laws. I don't want my child to grow up in that environment."

Guerrero helped draft the school district's resolution, which not only denounces Arizona's immigration laws but also warns San Diego Unified families of the risks of traveling to that state. She told 10News early Tuesday that she felt certain the resolution would pass.

A recent 10News poll showed 51 percent of San Diegans agree with Arizona's law, and several of those citizens addressed the board as well at Tuesday night's meeting.

School board condemns Arizona immigration law

Measure stops short of warning against travel there

By Maureen Magee, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
    Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 9 p.m.

Stopping short of warning students against travel to Arizona, the San Diego school board on Tuesday passed a resolution condemning the state’s new immigration law as unconstitutional.

Approved unanimously, the resolution urges Arizona to repeal legislation that will allow law enforcement to question anyone on their immigration status — and detain those who cannot prove legal residency — if stopped for reasonable cause.

At the urging of board Vice President John Lee Evans, the board eliminated an Arizona travel warning that President Richard Barrera had proposed for students and their families out of concern they may be subject to harassment or racial profiling. However, the San Diego Unified School District will develop a policy restricting travel and participation in conferences in Arizona.

“Families and children can make their own decisions about travel,â€

A resolution big woopie. These school board members are about the lowest thing on the political ladder but they sure think they are something important and can dictate to the people of Arizona what they should and shouldn't do. Laughable.

Now that they have called attention to themselves, it might be a good time to look at how they have been spending the taxpayer's money.

It's clear none of them bothered to read the bill before they passed the resolution, issued their travel warning, and tried to compare illegal aliens to Freed Slaves. What a disgrace they are. Sad, really. I wonder how many of them attended San Diego Unified School District schools?

See one of those names on my sample ballot so.....know who not to vote for.

Such a waste of time and political grandstanding. No telling how many illegals sit in San Diego schools and each body is more money.

California is the capitol of political correctness.

The school board should be concerned about educating U.S. Citizens and not what Arizona is doing. Arizona could not wait for the Federal Government to take ACTION! The struggle against the ILLEGALS invading the U.S. had to be fought at the State and Local level, pending the Federal Government deciding to Secure our Borders and Enforce our Immigration Laws with more than just Political speak!

What is the percentage of the Education Budget utilized to educate the Illegals and their anchors. These students should go back to their HOME countries and stop draining our resources that could be used to assist United States Citizens and not the ILLEGALS! Just follow the money! The Elitist Politicians and their Elitist Political Contributors want to continue to have United States Citizens pay the benefits for their ILLEGALS while they continue to have their BOTTOM LINES increased at the taxpayer's expense!

Hmmmm. . . .a teacher does not want to be put in the position of having to determine who is and who is not illegal and then forwarding the information. Although when my son was in kindergarten they had a good idea real quick. They gave many papers to the kids to be filled out and turned in the next morning. Those who could not fill them out because they could not read that they had to be turned in the next morning - that was the first step of weeding. I don't know if the students were merely weeded out for not having English as a first language - to address that issue or if they were weeded out for deportation.

To issue a travel warning is to admit that a large percentage of your population is illegal. And then to change your mind about it is like realizing that you just created a huge job cut for your school when people realize that your students are illegal - maybe even cut your own job.

I read somewhere that here in AZ there is another Pearce bill pending that will force the schools to count how many UDI students they have. Our state is one of the worst for not filling out the census too. It is difficult to know what you have and how to plan for it so they have to make it a law. I agree with it but of course that is prejudism! NOT!

My own sister does not have education because she was illegal alien in Italy and they would not educate her - end of story. We are the only nation with these grand standards for ourselves I think. Others are more realistic.

In response to a comment on the source article in "signonsandiego":

[i]I love your condescending attitude while attempting to make your point. Everyone enjoys a lecture by Elitist superior individuals. And again you are most likely still surprised that Al gore did not win! Feel free to define anyway you wish. The point is we will lose our sovereignty as a nation but I suppose to Elitists that is OK as long as you get you’re One World Government. You as most Elitist including the school board members see the world as one large college class case study were you are never concerned about real life results, after all in a class room environment a person does not have a consequence to worry about other than a class grade. The Elitist compete in a class just to see if they can win; if not no harm and no consequences, they just start another case study. The Elitist have never had a “realâ€
