School letter urges students to stay home

Mysterious mailer on immigration draws fire from parents, apologies from officials
    By George Watson, Staff Writer

COLTON - Some parents of Bloomington High School students got a surprise in their mail from the school district this week.

They received fliers supporting a national boycott to oppose a controversial federal immigration bill. The fliers were included in letters intended to notify them their children will undergo state testing this month.

Several parents called to complain Friday about the half-page fliers that urged students to stay home on May 1. The mailings were not endorsed or sanctioned by the school but were included in a letter with information about the state's Standardized Testing and Reporting program to be administered in district schools this month.

The question is how many letters went out, but officials believe they have an answer.

"We think it's very minimal," said Dennis Byas, superintendent of the Colton Joint Unified School District. "We are going to be following up on some things Monday morning."

What is particularly striking about the case, school officials say, is that the likely culprit came out of Bloomington's teacher-assistant ranks. The school of nearly 3,000 has 74 teacher assistants, who are high-performing students.

"Those are students who are usually 3.5, 4.0 (grade-point average) kids," said Ignacio Cabrera, the school principal. "We are talking really good students."

Controversy nationwide has been brewing in opposition to a House bill being debated by Congress. A movement has surfaced against the bill, and organizers have selected May 1 as the time for a national boycott. Latino students and workers have been asked to stay home in what is billed as, "A Day without a Mexican," a takeoff of a film released last year.

Cabrera said he has contacted the U.S. Postal Service to assess whether a federal crime was committed by the students. He has already provided the Postal Service with information related to the case, he said.

A Postal Service official did not return a call for comment Friday.

It's critical to handle the case seriously, Cabrera added.

"We are not advocating kids to stay home," he said.

A phone call was expected to be made Friday to every student's home so parents would know the school did not support the mailing, he said.

The flier stated, "Stay at home and kick it. Watch the U.S. struggle without us. May 1st will be the day the government loses tons of money and realizes who really runs this country."

It also urged students to act orderly and not riot.

With a student population that is 70 percent Latino, the immigration issue has been a focal point for the past several weeks. About two dozen students received citations a few weeks ago when they participated in a walkout seen across the state and country.

School officials may have no idea how many of the fliers made it into envelopes, but they do know that many of the STAR letters did not include them, Cabrera said.

One upset parent who has three students at the school called officials, the principal said. The parent reported that individual letters were sent to each student, but only one of the mailings included the flier.

The STAR program measures a student's base of knowledge while providing school officials with a better understanding of their teaching practices.

The tests will be held Tuesday through Friday.

Like I said on another thread--LET THEM STAY HOME. They would be doing OUR children a HUGE FAVOR by not taking up classroom space that could be better utilized by AMERICANS. And, I'm sure the teachers would be happy to hear that news. Maybe they can accomplish something on at least ONE DAY this year that was not disrupted by people who won't speak our language.
