Schools giving half-days, rescheduling AIMS due to march

While police are trying to keep Monday's immigration-rights march from affecting traffic, some Valley schools are giving half-days and even rescheduling AIMS testing to make sure students aren't affected.

AIMS testing started Thursday in Paradise Valley -- two days before it was scheduled to start.

Officials say they had to move the test because students would have missed it and that could hurt the district.

"The No Child Left Behind Act requires that school districts test a minimum of 95 percent of all students and they break it out by sub-group, including Hispanics, and we anticipate that it will be the Hispanic students who may be absent in the highest numbers on Monday," said Judi Willis with the Paradise Valley School District.

Schools in Phoenix Elementary School District 1 will have a half-day on Monday.

A lot of those schools are along the march route and the district wants to make sure the students can get home safely.

On Rush Limbaugh a lady from Maryland called to say the highschool principle at one of their schools was giving them their volunteer credits for going to the march.
