California Law Enforcement Getting Testy With Schwarzenegger Over His Latest Comments—Apology Demanded
By Frank D. Russo
The following letter was just received from a number of law enforcement leaders from across California. Earlier today, it was sent to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger demanding that he apologize for his latest statement that they found insulting to the men and women who protect California families and communities.
The letter in its entirety appears below:
July 14, 2006
Governor Schwarzenegger,
We in the law enforcement community were offended, but not surprised, by your latest insult to the men and women who protect California families and communities. You said recently that you support the Minutemen and the hiring private security because “I felt that the police could not really cover every single house and protect the children and families." (Los Angeles Times, July 12, 2006) We were not surprised because this represents the latest insult in your consistent pattern of attacking law enforcement professionals, including your special election initiatives on last year’s ballot. We resent the fact that you feel hiring private security can replace highly trained, state certified law enforcement officers.
On your watch, violent crime has increased in California for the first time in years. Yet the number of peace officers on the streets remains well below the national average. Currently, California counts 217 sworn peace officers for every 100,000 residents, well below the national average of 252. And while Chicago and New York far exceed the national average number of police per capita, Los Angeles counts only 236 officers for every 100,000 residents.
Your continued attacks on law enforcement professionals, as well as your attempts to cut officers’ retirements and benefits, and slash local communities’ funding for law enforcement, exacerbate the recruitment crisis that prevents us from having enough cops on the beat so that criminals and gangs know they will be swiftly caught and prosecuted.
We are certainly capable of protecting “the children and families” – but we need and deserve the support of our Governor. You should immediately apologize to the law enforcement community and the families who they protect, and cease your attacks on these professionals who protect our communities.
Sincerely,
Ron Cottingham
