SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Among the many land mines that dot the California political terrain, few are as treacherous or unpredictable as the matter of illegal immigration.

The subject blew up in Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's face last week, at a speech before the Newspaper Association of America. Responding to a question, the Republican governor suggested officials should "close the border in California, all across Mexico and the United States" to stem the flow of undocumented migrants.

Critics pounced, and Schwarzenegger apologized the next day. He blamed faulty English for the gaffe, and said he was for "securing the borders" instead.

"We have a terrific relationship with Mexico," Schwarzenegger said. "I filmed four movies in Mexico, I love to go on vacation to Mexico. We have a great trade agreement with Mexico."

But as Democrats huffed and puffed over Schwarzenegger's alleged malapropism - "the governor's words are an embarrassment," scolded state Treasurer Phil Angelides - the state's two Democratic U.S. Senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, voiced their own concerns about the problems posed by leaky borders. Boxer warned that President Bush's proposed guest worker program to grant legal status to millions of immigrants living in the United States would "open the floodgates" to more illegal immigration. And Feinstein helped block a bill to legalize about 500,000 farmworkers in the U.S., calling it a "huge magnet" for illegal newcomers.

The comments from the state's top three elected officials illustrate the growing concern over the challenges posed by illegal immigration - an issue so vexing and emotional that it has proven resistant to political solutions.

A report released in March by the Pew Hispanic Center estimates that about 11 million undocumented migrants now live in the United States, half of whom come from Mexico. California is home to 2.4 million, far more than any other state.

Illegal immigration has become a matter of acute sensitivity for many Californians and residents of other border states. Fairly or unfairly, many voters believe undocumented migrants take American jobs, place undue burden on social welfare systems, and pose homeland security concerns. California currently spends more than $750 million per year to incarcerate illegal immigrants.

Overall, California's population is about 33 percent Hispanic - the vast majority here legally. Taken together, the state's large Hispanic presence and a growing populist revolt over illegal immigration have created a perilous environment for politicians.

California Republicans saw their status take a nosedive back in 1994, when then-Gov. Pete Wilson backed a controversial ballot initiative, Proposition 187, that would have denied many social services to undocumented migrants. The measure was passed by voters, but courts blocked its enforcement, and the GOP paid a lasting political price as Hispanic voters fled the party in droves.

In the 2004 election, Republican Rep. David Dreier, the powerful chairman of the House Rules Committee, saw his winning margin dwindle to its lowest level in 24 years after he became the target of a fierce radio campaign over his support for Bush's guest worker program and for more H1-B visas to foreign workers. The popular John and Ken radio show dubbed him a "political human sacrifice" and he barely kept his Los Angeles-area congressional seat.

Democrats tasted political backlash of their own during the 2003 recall election, when then-Gov. Gray Davis signed legislation authored by Sen. Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) allowing illegal immigrants to apply for driver's licenses.

Davis had vetoed almost identical legislation the year before, citing security concerns, so the move was seen as a craven attempt to secure his Hispanic base, and drove even more voters to Schwarzenegger, who made good on a promise to have the law repealed after he was sworn in.

Schwarzenegger has often found himself tangled in the complexities of the immigration issue, despite his repeated insistence that it is a federal matter.

One issue is his own immigration history. During the recall campaign, opponents raised questions about whether he worked with a proper visa when he emigrated to the U.S. from Austria in 1968. He was also grilled during the campaign about his past support for Proposition 187, and his position on the driver's license issue led him to be disinvited from a popular Mexican Independence Day parade in Los Angeles.

Since becoming governor, Schwarzenegger has expressed support for Bush's guest worker program. At the same meeting where he made the controversial remarks about the border, Schwarzenegger also spoke favorably about new legislation crafted by Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) that would combine tough enforcement and a guest worker program that would eventually allow immigrants to attain legal status.

For his part, John Kobylt of the John and Ken show said he watched the tempest over Schwarzenegger's statement with a mixture of amusement and disgust.

"Everyone has the case of the vapors," Kobylt said. "You've got to do something to stop the illegal alien flow. No one is suggesting the Berlin Wall."

As it happens, the John and Ken Show is one of several conservative California talk shows that are inviting listeners to fly to Washington next week to lobby members of congress on the illegal immigration issue.

"Most of them are just girlie men," Kobylt said. "They are very frightened people. They give us big targets."

Why would John McCain from Arizona, the state of the Minuteman Project where 7500 illegal aliens cross the border every month at just one spot do anything that would increase the number of people into his state or the United States?

Does Senator McCain not realize that:

    1) his state doesn't want any more illegal aliens as evidenced by the passing of Proposition 200

    2) his state can't afford any more illegal aliens as evidenced by the reason Proposition 200 was initiated to begin with

    3) that there is no evidence in the market place that we have a people shortage

    4) that there is substantial evidence in the market place that we have more people than we can sustain and more workers than jobs

    5) that we have too much unneeded illegal labor that is depriving American Citizens of their right to jobs under the Equal Employment Opportunity Act

    6) that any action taken to create unfair competition in the labor market is a civil rights violation against the American Citizens and punishable by law

    Are McCain and Kennedy Globalists?

    Oh my my my.......

When a War Hero and the brother of one of the most revered Presidents of modern history start carrying the torch for Globalism, and apparently each other, through silly and foolish "more migration bills" to bring more people into the United States....when every poll on the subject is 90% AGAINST it.....the American People need to QUERY!!!

Most would ask Why, but I guess they decided to ask....Why Not....and assured their Globalist Pals they'd get them something this year so one could become and one could remain part of the......"Globally Elite".

Next thing you know, John and Teddy will be holding hands to appease the "Globally Elite" and after that....who can say how this relatonship might develop because I must say....if there was ever an Odd Couple in Political Union....it would be this pair.

John McCain is a bigot phony. He's sickening.Remember his derogatory slang he used a few years ago that pertained to Asians? He single handedly offended every person of any Asian lineage in the country not to mention the rest of the world. But our racist country didn't bat an eye because Asians are group that all the other bickering ethnic groups (Blacks,Whites,Latinos) can agree to stop hating each other for a minute in order to hate Asians. After Black people the most hated group of Americans by Latinos (not just the illegal immigrants either) are the Asians. You think this guy did all that time as a POW being broken and who knows what else and kept his sanity?C'mon. He being the bigot he is is more than aware of the mega rise in illegal immigrants in his state but he's a lame. And by the way the 7500 illegals a month thing for NM is very conservative. And the Ca. Latino population at 33% is about 40% outdated. And Arnold has already folded like a chair;he constantly brings up how his wife doesn't want him away and he should be at home and is tired of living in hotel in Sacramento, etc.

Don't know he's a bigot. But he is a faker. I remember all the derogatory things he said about the Swift Vets in the last election, perhaps fearing that the Swift Vets and POWs for the Truth might turn their sights on him, on ole 'Ace', before they were through. The Swift Vets site is still around, after all.

it's simple-our country is ran by racists. It's the strongest most consistant institution in America. It has predated churches, political parties, universities, etc. We've had a president show the ultra racist pro KKK 'the birth of a naition' film in the Whitehouse and proclaim "unfortunately it's all so true".We've enacted fed laws because of a Black boxers taste for White women. We erect statues and name streets after "Black Jack" Pershing who authorized wholesale slaughter in the Phillipines and allowed soldiers to 'hunt' anyone over 10 yrs old, with an 'official' toll as 110,000 in one year.We train Ho Chi Min to be one of our best allies during WWII but don't think he's capable of running his own country after the war even though the forerunner of the CIA highly recommends him.We idly sit while Rwanda goes on.We give Cambodia back to to Pol Pot after we know he's commited genocide on his own people. We allow Hitler to test his tactics and weapons and go on to put a dark spot on history by not participating against him in the Spanish Civil war.And we USE weapons of mass destruction on someone-Japan because in our eyes they were easier to dehumanize. We put the royal Hawaiian family under house arrest and then remove them from power because Dole of the famous Dole pineapple co. doesn't see any reason why "savages" should rule something with such financial potential.Yes,indeed, racism is alive and well at the top here in the US.

He'd be sweeping floors on the third shift at the local 7-11!!

I believe the reason we used mass nuclear weapons on Japan is because we had been attacked by them; that war cost alot of American lives; and President Truman did not want to lose any more fighting a long ground battle with the Japanese in Japan. It is one of those sickening decisions only he had the burden to make. Japan had the choice after the first bomb was dropped and many times before that to surrender. Japan made the choice 3 days later not to surrender knowing that another would be dropped if they didn't. There was a 3 day delay to give them time to end it. They choice to start that war and they alone chose to continue it. Our country fought two wars on two fronts from 1941 to 1945 and the Americans didn't start either one of them.

America lost 68,000 Americans in the Viet Nam War trying to help Southeast Asia remain independent from communism. We entered that war because we had a treaty obligation to do so, called SEATO, the South East Asian Treaty Organization.

We have not entered the African Theater because of the blood bath we be blamed for.

Our government may be racist. I never thought so until the past three weeks. I believe they created a new minority group that wasn't to allow advancement of a Caucasian Group over the African American Group. The pandering to illegal immigration and massive legal and illegal immigration with a distinct preference for Mexican and Hispanic entrants into the United States has been inexplicable to me when black citizens still needed so much and still do.

Our economy is in a spiral with not enough of anything to go around.

The belief that the United States is strong is a myth at the moment. We have allowed silly fools and pay boys and pay girls to make decisions they were clearly not competent to make.

Somewhere between the day they were elected by their home state or district and their arrival in Congress or the White House, they either lost themselves or were far enough away from home to show their true colors.
