Scores Injured as 200 Migrants Reach Ceuta in Mass Breach of Border Fence

CEUTA – Scores were injured on Monday when a group of Sub-Saharan migrants managed to reach the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in a mass breach of a border fence, Spanish authorities said.

Some 30 people sustained injuries of various severity when more than 200 migrants entered Ceuta after a mass attempt to cross the fence separating the Spanish enclave from Morocco, according to initial estimations provided by the Spanish authorities.

Spanish police and Civil Guard agents were dispatched to the scene of the incident and tried to contain the groups attempting to climb the fence.

A Civil Guard source told EFE that the group split off into different streets of the city, so the exact number of people who managed to reach Spanish territory remained unknown.

Members of the group that managed to jump the fence ran away in order to avoid being detained by police, though at least 50 migrants were intercepted.

The Red Cross launched a special operation to take 29 migrants to the University Hospital after some sustained injuries as a consequence of jumping the six-meter-high fence.

Those who were intercepted would be taken to the temporary holding center (CETI) in Ceuta, a Spanish city of about 85,000 residents located in northern Africa.

Among those who jumped the border fence between Morocco and Spain were minors aged between 15 and 17 from various African countries, including Mali, the Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, according to the NGO “Walking Borders.”
