Restaurant owner avoids prison time in immigrant case

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) The owner of a Sioux Falls restaurant was fined 15-thousand dollars today and ordered to perform community service for hiring illegal immigrants and paying them in cash to cover up their illegal status.

Julio Espino had pleaded guilty earlier.

A federal judge also ordered four years of supervised probation and six months of house arrest for Espino.

Last month, the manager of the restaurant was fined three-thousand dollars and placed on four years' probation after pleading guilty to recruiting illegal aliens for employment.
