Thread: SD- Senate OKs bill to punish employers of illegals

Feb 23, 2011 6:40pm PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Senate has passed a bill that would make it a state crime to employ an illegal immigrant.
If the bill becomes law, anyone who knowingly employs an illegal immigrant would face up to a $1,000 fine for the first offense, with possible jail time for future offenses.

The Senate passed the bill 23-12 on Wednesday. It now moves to the House.

South Dakota joins other states in considering bills this year that deal with illegal immigrants, after Arizona passed anti-illegal immigration laws last year.

By one estimate, the state has about 2,000 illegal immigrants out of a population of about 814,000.

"They always lie about the number of IA's there are regardless of the size of the area!" The cost of illegal immigration to the state of South Dakota is $39 million a year, sorry but 2000 illegals are not going to get that much help per illegal!"
