The Coast Guard and lifeguards were searching Wednesday afternoon for a young man who disappeared in the surf after being seen by U.S. Border Patrol agents swimming around the border fence about 3 miles south of Imperial Beach.

Border Patrol agents spotted the man, believed to be in his 20s, about 1:30 p.m, said Imperial Beach lifeguard Capt. Robert Stabenow. He was last seen about 50 yards north of the fence, then disappeared from view.

Imperial Beach lifeguards and Silver Strand State Beach lifeguards, along with a Coast Guard helicopter and two Coast Guard rescue boats, are looking for him, along with a San Diego Police Department helicopter.

He was wearing a black-and-red horizontal-striped shirt and jeans.
