SEASIDE, Calif.- Seaside police arrested Ernesto Alonzo Thursday evening for a traffic violation at Sonoma Ave. at Soto St. Ernesto Alonzo matched the description for the victim in a violent home-invasion rape that occurred Monday morning, September 24, 2007.

Officers say the intruder entered through an open window while she was sleeping. During the encounter a struggle followed and the victim was struck repeatedly with a hammer.

Ernesto was arrested for driving without a license and for a possible immigration violation. Detectives later charged Avina with rape, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and other charges.

The department initially chose not to release information on this incident for fear that the suspect would flee the country. Once Avina was in custody, detectives went to his residence and found evidence that he was, in fact, in the process of moving.

Ironically, one of the photographs used to assist in identifying Avina in this case was from surveillance photos taken during the theft of a dog at the SPCA earlier this month
