Second arson arrest:Guatemala native arrested
Second arson arrest in Southern Calif.; no arrests in major fires
By JEREMIAH MARQUEZ
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER
LOS ANGELES -- A man was arrested after witnesses saw him setting fire to a hillside, the second arson arrest since wildfires broke out across Southern California this week, police said Thursday.
Elsewhere, federal agents were sent to help local investigators search for evidence in the Orange County foothills where an arson fire has destroyed nine homes.
In San Bernardino County, a man suspected of starting a small fire in the mountains was arrested Wednesday. Another man was arrested Tuesday and still another was shot to death that day by police after he fled officers who approached to see if he might be trying to set a fire.
None of the cases has been connected to any of Southern California's major wildfires, which have scorched about 753 square miles and destroyed about 1,800 homes since late Saturday.
Since the fires began, authorities have stepped up patrols in hopes of preventing copycat fires and looting.
San Diego County officials have reported scattered instances of looting in fire zones and illegal immigrants posing as evacuees to wrangle free food and supplies at Qualcomm Stadium. Drunken drivers and curfew violators have also been arrested in evacuation areas of the fire-scarred San Bernardino Mountains.
The latest arrest came Wednesday after witnesses spotted 41-year-old Catalino Pineda starting a fire on a San Fernando Valley hillside and then walking away, Los Angeles police said.
Witnesses alerted authorities and followed him to a nearby restaurant where police arrested him.
Pineda, a Guatemala native, was booked for investigation of arson and held on $75,000 bail. He's currently on probation for making excessive false emergency reports to law enforcement, police said.
On Tuesday, a motorcyclist who authorities say set a small fire in a rural foothill area of the San Bernardino Mountains was arrested for investigation of arson.
Also Tuesday, police shot and killed a man who fled after authorities approached to see if he might be trying to set a fire in San Bernardino. The man, identified as Russell Lane Daves, 27, of Topac, Ariz., led police on a chase then backed his car into a police cruiser before an officer opened fire, police said.

Someone find out for us where they are holding Catalino Pineda and let's see if they have an immigration hold on him. The 75k bond sounds low for an illegal alien, but then again this is CA we are talking about. Let's check on this one.

Woodland Hills residents saw a man lighting a fire then walking away about 4:30 yesterday on a hillside near Del Valle Street and Ponce Avenue. After calling police, the residents followed him to a restaurant and waited for police to arrive.
Police booked Catalino Pineda, a day laborer from Sun Valley, into the Los Angeles County Jail where he was being held on an arson charge. Bail was set at $75,000.
Pineda is a native of Guatemala. He is currently on probation for making excessive false emergency reports to law enforcement, police said.

Vigilantes arrest Guatamalian Arsonist in L.A.
Yep, an illegal South-of-the-border alien. Funny how everyone yesterday, and the mouthpieces at Faux News were just about foaming at the mouth to blame Al Qaeda or Iran's mullahs for these fires.
The blame can be laid on the feet of Jorge Bush, who has left our wide open borders and who greatly accelerated the current invasion of Mexican and Hispanic illegals.
The War on Terror is a big crock of sh**. You can see it as a big crock and how ludicrous the whole concept is by seeing how pathetic our borders are and how our Republican leaders have allowed an illegal invasion of our nation. When Bush gets up, and tells us that we need to avoid WWIII by blowing Iran to smithereens, and then IGNORES THE FACT that our own nation is being invaded and borders are negligently left open, I know to call him the damnable liar that he is.

No you shouldn't be surprised. Most illegals are let out on probation. ICE won't come and deport them so they just let the go.

We do not have evidence that confirms Pineda as an illegal alien yet.
We need to find out if he was here on a legal visa or as an illegal alien.
Even if he was here legally, he should have been deported instead of just given probation if convicted of the serious crimes.
We need the details of his immigration status or lack of status before we can run with this.
