State Senate approves bill denying public aid to illegal immigrants

Illegal immigrants in Pennsylvania would be denied public benefits under a bill approved by the state Senate. The Senate approved the measure 41-9 on Wednesday and sent it to the House.
The legislation would require anyone seeking public benefits to show valid, government-issued identification. They also would have to provide a sworn statement that they are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. The bill would exempt children younger than 18, anyone eligible for Medicare and anyone receiving Supplemental Security Income or Social Security disability income.

The Senate approved a similar bill last year, but it died in the House.

Gov. Ed Rendell and other critics have said there's no proof illegal immigrants have received benefits and that the bill would hurt legal residents who have no ID.
