SEN. VITTER CRITICIZES DREAM ACT ON SENATE FLOOR

SEN. VITTER CRITICIZES DREAM ACT ON SENATE FLOOR

    US Fed News
    September 16, 2010
    WASHINGTON, D.C.

The office of Sen. David Vitter, R-La., issued the following news release:

U.S. Sen. David Vitter today made the following remarks on the U.S. Senate floor criticizing the DREAM Act, legislation that includes allowing states to grant in-state tuition to illegal alien students.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has announced his intention to bring the amnesty measure up for a vote next week.

"I am extremely disappointed that Senator Reid intends to allow a vote on the DREAM Act," said Vitter.

"Amnesty and economic incentives only exacerbate the problem of illegal immigration, and while this bill is disguised as an educational initiative, it is simply another measure that offers a path to citizenship for illegals in this country and allows in-state college tuition for illegal immigrant students. Despite the fact that Senator Reid and other supporters of this bill describe its beneficiaries as children, in reality this legislation allows illegal aliens up the age of 35 to be eligible to receive amnesty and qualify for federal student loans."

"This is a very bad idea anytime, but this is an especially bad idea in our current economic climate. At a time when many American families can't afford to send their own children to college, this bill is an insult to legal tax-paying American citizens whose hard-earned money will be used to finance the education of illegal aliens.

"The American people have made it very clear that they want to see the government fulfill its responsibility and enforce America's immigration laws already on the books and take immediate steps to control illegal immigration - not reward continued bad behavior with tuition breaks."

"As chairman of the Senate Border Security Caucus, I will not relent in the fight to stop this amnesty measure from ever passing."

Vitter stated that in the event the legislation passes, he will immediately submit an amendment to strike the provision that allows states to grant in-state tuition to illegal alien students.
