The State Of Indiana has issued following press release:

A key Senate committee is scheduled to hear legislation sponsored by Sen. Jim Buck (R-Kokomo) that prohibits individuals who are not lawfully in the United States from being eligible to pay in-state tuition rates at state colleges and universities.

Buck said the Senate Committee on Education will consider House Bill 1402 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 233 at the Statehouse on Thursday.

"This legislation codifies existing policies used by our state colleges and universities, which only provide in-state tuition rates to students who are U.S. citizens or those who have been given permanent status by the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service,' Buck said.

"We must take action to ensure Hoosier students are getting their fair shake of the higher education dollars."

Currently, students attending a state college or university are required to prove they have lived in Indian for at least 12 consecutive months in order to receive discounted tuition rates.

The difference in resident and non-resident tuition rates ranges from $3,500 to $18,700 per academic year depending on the state institution, Buck said.
