    Sensenbrenner unrepentant on immigration

    And we're not either!

'Sensenbrenner said it was unfortunate that immigration reform wasn't passed while he was House Judiciary Committee chairman, but he took credit for stopping broad immigration proposals that he said would have granted amnesty to illegal aliens. "I held tight and won," he declared.

Fight was worthy, he tells conservatives

Washington - Appearing before the annual Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday, Jim Sensenbrenner introduced himself as the "poster child for immigration reform" and offered up his notoriety on the issue among Latinos as a badge of honor.

The Menomonee Falls congressman recalled that at pro-immigration rallies, there were posters of his face on top of Nazi uniforms and Klan robes and signs that said "F _ _ _ Sensenbrenner."

"I'm fairly certain the 'F' was not for my first name," said F. James.

Sensenbrenner said it was unfortunate that immigration reform wasn't passed while he was House Judiciary Committee chairman, but he took credit for stopping broad immigration proposals that he said would have granted amnesty to illegal aliens. "I held tight and won," he declared.

The lawmaker appeared at the end of the second day of the three-day conference. The crowd thinned considerably as Sensenbrenner spoke, the result of his having to follow remarks by conservative author Ann Coulter, who was a huge hit with an audience dominated by college students.

Sensenbrenner also told the crowd that his party lost the 2006 election because "Republicans forgot to be conservatives."

Fighting back: Republican Rep. Tom Petri of Fond du Lac took aim at "smear polls" in a bill introduced last week. Those are the bogus "surveys" conducted to damage a political opponent's reputation.

As Petri tells it: "During a smear poll, a caller claiming to be taking a poll spreads negative, and generally false, information about a political opponent.

"When the person being 'polled' is asked if his or her support for candidate 'X' would continue if they learned that the candidate had never paid any taxes, had embezzled from his employer, liked to drown puppies or some other charge, it makes little difference if the allegation is true because the charge has been planted," he said.

The measure, which has drawn bipartisan support, would require large polls conducted for federal candidates to identify the poll's sponsor. And if the polls were not being made public, sponsors would have to make disclosure to the Federal Election Commission, including a transcript of the questions.
