September 11 suspect arrested by Mexico
September 11 suspect arrested
From correspondents in Mexico City
June 22, 2005
From: Agence France-Presse
MEXICO has arrested Amer Haykel, a British man of Arab extraction sought by US authorities in connection with the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US.
Haykel was arrested in Todo Santos, a town in the north-eastern Mexican state of Baja California, the office of Mexico's Attorney-General (PGR) said today.
"The PGR arrested ... Haykel, whom US authorities have linked to extremist groups presumably involved in the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York," the office said in a statement.
Officials said Haykel was arrested at the Todo Santos fire department, following "investigative and intelligence work and exchange of information with the US Government".

"The suspect, who was born in Beirut and speaks fluent Arabic, English, French and Spanish, was turned over to immigration authorities and taken to Mexico City to determine his legal status," the PGR statement said.

Mexico Blames U.S. for Terror Suspect Confusion
"PA"
The Mexican government today blamed the US for confusion leading to the detention of a Lebanese-born, British citizen falsely suspected of terrorist links.
President Vicente Fox’s spokesman Ruben Aguilar said US officials had dropped the man from alert lists but failed to tell Mexico.
Mexican agents detained Amer Haykel on Monday after US authorities provided information that he was linked to extremist groups tied to the September 11 attacks. They released him yesterday, saying he had done nothing wrong.
“The US will issue an explanation about this problem of a lack of communication, for having sent alert lists to Mexico on which this man’s name has not been erased, Aguilar told a news conference.
He said Interior Secretary Carlos Abascal had brought up the matter with US Ambassador Tony Garza in a meeting yesterday.
Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said it had confirmed that Haykel “doesn’t represent any threat to national security, nor is he wanted by authorities in any country.
Before his arrest, Haykel spent several days in the Baja California tourist resort of Cabo San Lucas, sleeping in a local fire station, according to those who met him. He told acquaintances he was a pilot who was wandering the world on a tight budget.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at http://eepurl.com/cktGTn
