Serial wife raises questions about immigration, fraud
ISSUE: Woman allegedly married 10 men.

Some women think its tough dealing with one husband. Imagine having 10.

That's the number of marriages Eunice Lopez, of Miami, is accused of racking up in a span of four years, according to a recent report in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. She ended up in hot water not for the many marriages, but because she failed to divorce the hubbies she no longer wanted.
I can tell you, even after 28 years in the criminal court system, I've never heard of anything like this," said Terry Chavez, a spokeswoman for the Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney.

These days we seem to hear more about divorces than marriages. That a woman managed to marry 10 times, without divorcing from one marriage to the next, is a major feat — not to mention a huge savings in attorney fees.

And it turns out Lopez may be a true entrepreneur at heart, allegedly marrying illegal immigrants for profit. She faces nine counts of felony bigamy, according to the news report. She could face a penalty of up to five years in prison for each count.

But it beats haggling for alimony, right?

Predictably, this bizarre story raised plenty of eyebrows. The alleged motive, skirting immigration laws with sham marriages, is an age-old trick, however.

That Lopez seemed to be able to get away with it for so long, and so brazenly, is nonetheless dismaying. Where were court and civil records to spot the abuse? Sure, she had a common last name, but can it be that easy to get away with this so many times?

Now that the perpetual bride is out of business, we hope she takes marriage more seriously next time around. One man should be enough for any woman to handle — no matter how shrewd his wife.

BOTTOM LINE: Jokes aside, why didn't court records spot the alleged fraud?
