Sessions: Judges costing taxpayers with immigration rulings

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) —U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions criticized federal judges who've thwarted some of President Donald Trump's immigration policies at a judicial conference Friday in Des Moines.

Sessions spoke at the 8th Circuit Judicial Conference, telling the crowd that the judges' "erroneous rulings" have been costly to taxpayers and that judges "aren't sent from Olympus."

Trump has panned judges who've blocked his immigration policies, including those who've ruled against his administration's effort to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. The program was enacted during President Barack Obama's administration. It has authorized around 700,000 people brought to the United States illegally as children to obtain work permits and driver's licenses.

Earlier this month, a federal judge halted a deportation process and threatened to hold Sessions in contempt if the mother and daughter in the case weren't returned to the United States.

Sessions claimed in a half-hour speech that crime statistics nationwide are going down, and his main concern is the rise in the use of the painkiller fentanyl, and the many deaths it has caused.

"We've got to do better at immigration," he said, adding that Trump has made a commitment to the American people to control immigration. Sessions said he's determined to make progress, pushing back against critics of the president's immigration policy.

"It's not right to say we're going to build a wall around America. That's hogwash," Sessions said.

The country has a fair and legal system to admit immigrants, and the current law must be followed, said Sessions, citing statistics that Iowa has 40,000 undocumented immigrants in the state.

Sessions appeared with his chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, who was a Des Moines lawyer and the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa from 2004 to 2009.

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, chair of the Judiciary Committee, also appeared at the conference, held at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center.

Outside the Rotary Club event, a No Hate in Our State protest and rally greeted Sessions.

About 15 to 20 protesters entered the lobby of the Wakonda Country Club on Fleur Drive, chanting, "No hate, no Sessions," while holding signs with the words "Abolish ICE" and "Black Lives Matter."

One protester chanted using a bullhorn. Secret Service agents with Sessions kept the demonstrators in the lobby, while Des Moines police arrived and asked the protesters to leave, which they did.
