- Sheriff Babeu unhappy with release of illegal immigrants
PHOENIX - Hundreds of illegal immigrants are being set free across the country, 500 just in Arizona.
Over the weekend, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement freed illegals from Pinal County, and Sheriff Paul Babeu is not happy about it.
It's all part of the sequester happening Friday and Homeland Security was the first hit.
Pinal County is really seeing the effects.
Sheriff Paul Babeu is outraged and he's speaking out.
Hundreds of criminals who are illegal immigrants were released from prison in Pinal County and are roaming free in Arizona communities.
Law enforcement has no idea where they are.
"ICE, who did this under the cloak of secrecy...we brought this up publicly today and only then did they acknowledge we're not going to tell you how we've released or where we've released them from, that's a problem. Where's the transparency in the government?" said Babeu.
Babeu is left to wonder whether this is a political ploy to get the sequester passed on Friday.
He says nearly 500 criminals were released over the weekend.
Babeu is calling it a budget pardon.
"Many suggest that this could be a political weapon that's being used of 'hey look at the bad things that are going to start to happen if you don't vote for this sequester', for the government to borrow and not to cut as much," said Babeu.
Other cuts, according to the White House, are fewer food inspections, less treatment for those who are mentally ill and schools losing federal funding, just to name a few.
For the border state of Arizona, all are a priority, but Babeu says illegal immigrants, who are also criminals let out of jail, is not part of the solution to the sequester.
"I respect the President and his views, his political views and his leadership, I disagree with his philosophy, but when it comes to this, certainly look for savings but don't release criminals in our communities that is off the table," said Babeu.
