The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office launched a crime-suppression sweep Thursday with nearly 200 deputies and volunteers targeting human smuggling, drophouses and illegal drugs across the Phoenix area, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Thursday.

A spike in human-smuggling arrests in January by patrol deputies prompted the Sheriff's Office to launch the 18th crime-suppression operation, Arpaio said. The office's newly formed Illegal Immigration Enforcement Posse plans to join in the sweep.

Undercover surveillance led to the arrest of 56 suspected illegal immigrants in the days preceding the launch of the sweep. So far Thursday, the sweep has led to 13 arrests on suspicion of human-smuggling violations.

Volunteers, including actor Steven Seagal, will sweep the entire Valley for the two 10-hour days.

Get the job done brothers!!! We need more Officers to perform crime sweeps throughout this Country, but they are held back from carrying out their work duties, due to fear of racial profiling in some States.

I heard Sheriff Joe say he would run for President if they couldn't find a real politician to take up job! Wouldn't that be the shit, No illegal left behind!

Steven Seagal, Sheriff Arpaio and all those wonderful deputies and volunteer posse are true patriots. God bless them all......What I thought was amusing in a way were the cartels using trebuchets to catapult drugs across the border. Almost as hilarious as using vehicle transports loaded with packages, driving right up to the fence and dumping them on our side of the border. Other smugglers were driving trucks up to the border fence, placing boards on top of the trailers and pushing the drug packages over the fence. Unbelievable.

PHOENIX - Starting Thursday at 4 p.m., the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is conducting a 2-day crime suppression and illegal immigration sweep in the valley.

For the last few days, deputies and posse members have conducted a large scale undercover surveillance and intelligence gathering operation on drop house activity, drug activity and human smuggling routes.

Before Thursday, they arrested 56 people -- including one person who has been deported 17 times previously. More than 400 pounds of marijuana have also been seized.

By Thursday night, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said they arrested an additional 31 people. That includes stopping 3 load vehicles and other offenses.

As is standard for events like this, protesters gathered outside the command center.

Actor Steven Seagal stopped by. Last November, he was sworn in as a member of the sheriff's posse.

This is the 18th operation of this kind, and the newly-formed "Illegal Immigration Enforcement Posse" will make its debut.
