PHOENIX - Is Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio looking for a new job?

On Friday the sometimes controversial sheriff asked on Twitter if President Barack Obama will call him to replace Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano who is resigning from the post to take a position as head of the University of California system.

Arpaio tweeted: With 50 yrs exp, think Obama will call me for DHS post? I was DEA chief Turkey, Mexico, L. America & TX - AZ borders!

On Saturday, Arpaio told reporters he thinks people around the country know who he is, even the President, but maybe not in a positive way.

He said he spent “three tours of duty” in Washington and wouldn’t leave his constituents here to have to report to someone. He said he now reports to four million people.

As for the speculation, Arpaio said he doesn’t expect the President to call him.

“But if he does call I’ll consider it,” Arpaio said. “But if I was a betting guy I expect to continue being the sheriff.
