EDINBURG — A police shooting that stemmed from a botched drug transaction and kidnapping Sunday afternoon is being labeled the first reported incident of spillover violence in Hidalgo County by Sheriff Lupe Treviño.

While other law enforcement officials, such as Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw, call Hidalgo County the center of spillover violence in Texas, Treviño repeatedly disputes those claims and is quick to dispel talk about cartel-related attacks in the U.S.

But the circumstances surrounding Sunday’s shooting, in which a suspect was killed and a deputy was injured, were enough to make him “say it like it is.â€

6 Suspects in Shooting of Deputy Go Before Judge

HIDALGO COUNTY - The six suspects accused of taking part in Sunday’s shooting of a Hidalgo County deputy went before a judge to face charges Tuesday.

The suspects were charged with possession of marijuana. Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino says five of the suspects are illegals and only one is a U.S. citizen. Trevino says his office is working to add more charges linked to the deputy's shooting. He says the suspects will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law.

The injured deputy is expected to recover. Sheriff Lupe Trevino says the shooting was a case of spillover violence. He says the battle for control of the Gulf Cartel has reached across the border.

The sheriff says the gunman in the shooting was contracted to find a lost load of marijuana for the Gulf Cartel.
