Sheriff: Teen raped, shot, left in river

Sheriff: Teen raped, shot, left in river

    Monday, October 15, 2012

LILLINGTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- Two men face charges in the alleged rape and shooting of a 17-year-old girl.

Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins said the teen was found in the Cape Fear River near the North Carolina Highway 217 bridge just before 4 a.m. Sunday.

"They had abducted her from her house where she was babysitting her 3-year-old sister. From there we understand now she was taken to the river where she was sexually assaulted. After the sexual assault had taken place, she was shot three times," Rollins said.

Officials said the victim suffered gunshot wounds to the face, abdomen, and hand. She was taken to Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dunn and then airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Rollins said his detectives have made two arrests in the case.

Jose Trinidad Soto Sanchez, 21, and Jose Juan Alverez, 28, both of Spring Lake, are charged with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping, and attempted murder.
Bond for both men was set at $1 million.

Rollins said the victim knew one of the suspects through her family.
The sheriff also said Alverez is in the country illegally from Mexico. Deputies are working to determine the alien status of Sanchez.

Two Spring Lake men charged with rape, kidnapping, attempted murder

    By Catherine Pritchard
    Staff writer
ERWIN - Two Spring Lake men are accused of raping, kidnapping and trying to kill a 17-year-old woman who was found in the Cape Fear River near Erwin on Sunday with at least three gunshot wounds to her face, abdomen and hands.
Jose Trinidad Soto Sanchez, 21, and Jose Juan Alvarez, 28, both of the same address on O&H Street, were arrested later Sunday and charged with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and attempted murder, according to the Harnett County Sheriff's Office.
Harnett County deputies, Highway Patrol troopers and Erwin police went to the river, where the woman was found just before 4 a.m. near the N.C. 217 bridge, according to a Sheriff's Office release.
The woman was taken to Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dunn, then airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Investigators determined the woman knew Sanchez, the release said, and both he and Alvarez were arrested Sunday afternoon.
Bail for each man was set at $1 million.
The Sheriff's Office is working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to determine the alien status of Sanchez.
ICE determined that Alvarez is a Mexican national who is in the United States illegally, according to the release.

LILLINGTON, N.C. -- A 17-year-old girl recovers at UNC Hospital after surviving a horrific attack.
The Harnett County Sheriff calls it, one of the worst crimes he's seen in 40 years. He says she was kidnapped, raped, shot several times, and left for dead in the Cape Fear River.
From the safety of her home on the west side of Harnett County, she ended up in grave danger on the east side: near the N.C. Highway 217 bridge.
Harnett County Sheriff Larry Rollins said, "It's just unimaginable the horror that she had to experience."
Illegal immigrants Jose Trinidad Soto Sanchez and Jose Juan Alverez face charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and rape. Both are behind bars on a million dollars bond each.

Rollins said, "Thank the good Lord she's alive."
She was left for dead in the Cape Fear River. Even though one of the gunshots hit her in the jaw, the 17-year-old girl was still able to call out for help. Two fishermen heard her cries, at about 4 a.m. Sunday.
Rollins said, "The closest officer was a highway patrolman who was on the scene first and got her out of the water."
The sheriff says the victim was babysitting her 3 year old sister when she was kidnapped. He says the 17-year-old knew Sanchez, because he was dating her older sister.
Rollins said, "How anybody can treat another human being in any such way, I just, there ain't much human in them it doesn't seem. It's a beastly act."
The sheriff says even though the suspects are here illegally, they will still be tried in North Carolina, before facing deportation.

He says the victim needed surgery on her jaw, and will not be able to speak temporarily. He says she is expected to make a full recovery, and is in stable condition.

This story begs the question, how many more so-called potential Dreamers just like these two are now getting a free pass under Obama's new temporary amnesty program? If they aren't Dreamers, how many others like these have crossed our borders unvetted?
