Cochise sheriff disputes fed's border security claims

PHOENIX -- Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever spoke at a hearing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday a disputed the Homeland Security Department's claim that the southern U.S. border is more secure than ever.

"I am not going to let the leadership at the very top get away with inaccurate and portrayal of conditions on the ground that really don't exist. That's a disservice to the American public, a disservice to the people that I serve."

Dever says the ultimate goal is for his officers to put zero time in their day toward dealing with human trafficking.

He wants them to ask the citizens who live near the border how secure it is.

"The day that they say that the the quality of life that we once had and we expect that we should have has been restored, they'll be the first to stand up and say 'Thank you very much.' We're not there yet. We have a long way to go."

He says if he was in charge of homeland security, he would add a layer of consequences which would include jail time for those caught crossing the border.

Dever says people cross over the border multiple times and are never charged with a crime.
