FLINT - A judge said the bludgeoning death of Helen Gonzales was "an ugly case" and an "unnecessary tragedy" before sentencing her killer to 40-60 years in prison.

"No one needs to have their life ended in the fashion Helen Gonzales had her life end," Genesee Circuit Judge Joseph J. Farah said.

Edgar A. DeLeon-Puentes, 22, a Mexican national, listened to Farah through interpreters Friday as he was sentenced for second-degree murder and armed robbery.
