Should Border Patrol close the Falfurrias checkpoint?

Every year, immigrants attempt to avoid the Falfurrias Border Patrol Checkpoint by trekking through Brooks County ranchland.

And every year, the dangerous journey kills dozens of immigrants.

Closing the checkpoint — and perhaps conducting immigration inspections in Hidalgo County instead — would save lives, according to an article published Wednesday in the Texas Observer.

“To choose the status quo is to tacitly accept a border enforcement policy that is driving human beings — most of whom come to the U.S. to reunite with family or to seek employment — to take extreme risks," according to the article by Forrest Wilder, an associate editor at the magazine.

"Border Patrol and local authorities, in consultation with landowners and human rights activists such as Canales, should at least study the issue," according to the article. "Instead, Border Patrol is planning to expand the Falfurrias checkpoint, doubling the number of lanes and adding personnel."

I have a better idea: Let's encourage immigrants - legal and illegal - to send money to their relatives in Mexico. Oh wait, they're already doing that.

And wanting to facilitate illegals undercutting Americans for entry level jobs is lunacy. Big time. The poorest Americans are already suffering high unemployment. Who in their right mind would want to make matters worse for them? Other than 'Bama & Co., of course.

Continue with the plan to expand the check point. I nor the nation have any responsibility over or about fools in other nations mistakes in judgment! We are not the world's keeper! Oh, well, common sense is not common and becoming more rare by the election.
