The city council had a meeting last night and discussed the proposed ordinance. I received an email from one of the councilmen who seems to have a problem with the ordinance:

Ms. Shelton,

Illegal immigration is a serious problem and will only get worse if all
government entities (Federal, State and local) don't act in a meaningful
way. I certainly do not want the City of Huntsville to support any
illegal activity or ignore it. The ordinance proposed tonight was with
good intent, but in my opinion and the city attorney's opinion violated
several federal laws. I do not believe fixing the problem by breaking
the law ourselves is a good solution.

I think that we can work on the proposal and with input from the people
we represent we can come up with some kind of ordinance that will help
solve the problem. Most everyone in the debate agrees that our country
accepts and holds dear legal immigrants. We just have to find some way
to protect the borders, penalize business owners that hire illegal
immigrants and deport the illegal immigrants that are taken into custody
by our police.

I expect this debate to go on for several months and through several
public work sessions. I hope you will continue to provide input.
