    Immigration rallies attract light turnout
Minutemen and pro-immigration activists garner smaller numbers.
    By NORBERTO SANTANA JR.
    The Orange County Register
A year ago, amid a burgeoning congressional debate, the illegal immigration issue drew hundreds of thousands into the streets across the country.

Despite renewed action in Congress, immigration activists on both sides now seem to be having a tougher time taking to the streets.

Last week, a planned school walkout among students supporting immigrants seemed to fizzle. On Saturday, a Santa Ana march expecting up to a thousand drew less than a hundred people. At the same time, a separate anti-illegal immigration protest spearheaded by activists working with the Minuteman Project in Costa Mesa drew less than fifty.

Immigration activist Nativo Lopez said stepped up federal immigration raids and local efforts to deport undocumented immigrants have caused many to stay away from rallies.

"It's incredible," said Lopez as he stood in a relatively empty Angels Community Park in Santa Ana. "It's creating terror in our communities."

Across town in Costa Mesa, Jane Culbertson, 55, stood firmly with a sign protesting illegal immigration. The retired nurse noted that many people who feel strongly about the issue just have other things to do on weekends.

Lopez wants to see a full legalization for millions of undocumented immigrants. Culbertson wants more border enforcement and expects her elected representatives in Congress to oppose any kind of amnesty.

In the middle are people like Patrick Thompson, an associate pastor at the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Costa Mesa. Despite co-sponsoring the matricula sign-up program with the Mexican consulate, Thompson said he doesn't like illegal immigration. But he does see a need to help and welcome those who are already here. And he doesn't see massive deportations as much of an answer.

"I look at the people and my heart goes out to them," Thompson said. "When you get to know the people, it changes your viewpoint."

Yea and last year, they skipped school and work to protest but this year they couldn't make it on the weekend. What an odd value system.

Earth to Nativo "Adolph" Lopez. Criminals are SUPPOSED to be uneasy and afraid. Your "community" are criminals.

PS. I gave Nativo the Adolph nickname because he thinks just like Hitler; Nativo says that this continent should only be for LaRaza the superior brown Cosmic race created by god, and that only Latinos have the brown skin color required to be part of this superior race.

Yeah, I saw that their numbers were way down from last year's down in Houston. I guess they realized the Mexican flags and Che Guerva t-shirts didn't have the desired effect. I wonder if they're going on strike again this May 1.

Actually I know a bunch of them I am open about my opposition to what they are doing but some of the same people seem to like me anyway. I do not trn them in but the time I tried I earned that the Immigration already has so many cases an individual without a major offense is no priority.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

What you need to do instead is tell their employer to fire them, and if they do not then you will turn their empoyer in.
