Smuggler Of Immigrant Children Sentenced In Kansas

A smuggler convicted of transporting illegal immigrants, including six unaccompanied children, has been sentenced in Kansas to 18 months in federal prison.

Santos Tomas Ochoa-Bello must also serve three years' probation under the sentence imposed Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren.

The 29-year-old Mexican national was sentenced under the terms of a plea deal to a charge of trafficking.

Ochoa-Bello made no courtroom statement.

Prosecutors said six children traveling alone were among the illegal immigrants found last November in a minivan stopped by the Kansas Highway Patrol in Barton County. The children included an unaccompanied 2-year-old girl wearing dirty clothes and an unchanged diaper.
