    Snow says immigration 2nd-greatest threat
Behind Iraq, unchecked border crossings must be 'fixed'

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow says uncontrolled borders pose the second-greatest danger to the United States of America, behind only the war in Iraq and the terrorists involved there.

In an exclusive interview with Les Kinsolving, WND's correspondent at the White House, he talked about the pending immigration reform proposal, as well as several other issues.

Kinsolving asked: "Other than the war in Iraq, do you know of any more serious problem about which more of the president's fellow Republicans and some Democrats are more seriously concerned than illegal immigration?"

"Probably not," Snow said. "It's enormous. Look, it's important to him. The fact is we let illegal immigration continue for 21 years. The good news is it's been declining rather than increasing. On the other hand, you've got an unacceptable situation and we've got to fix it."

Kinsolving cited a 1954 immigration control plan in which tens of thousands of illegal aliens were taken into custody, and up to an estimated 700,000 left the country on their own because of the crackdown, and he asked Snow if the president believes such things are possible, given the estimated 12-20 million illegal aliens in the U.S.

Snow noted that law enforcement agencies apprehended "nearly 1.2 million" illegal aliens in 2006. "We did put an end to catch and release. We worked on treaties to make sure we can send people back to their country of origin."

But Snow noted that the world is not the same now. A number of those illegal aliens are working at jobs in the United States, adding to the value of the U.S. economy, he said.

Taking an opportunity to promote a comprehensive immigration reform proposal Bush has worked to have resurrected in the U.S. Senate, Snow said those who follow those requirements truly will have demonstrated their desire to be citizens, by learning English, paying fines and meeting other requirements.

"In point of fact, Les, we are being tougher on the border than ever before," Snow said.

And with a sudden departure of a portions of a labor force, the United States economy would suffer, and "fall behind other countries."

A future supply of labor also is needed, which is why the U.S. should "regularize" plans for bringing workers in, he said.

The ultimate solution, he said, is to raise the economy in Mexico to standards close to the United States, which automatically would remove many of the incentives for illegal immigration.

"It's important that we try to build prosperity throughout the region," he said. "In the end the inspiration for illegal immigration will go away as they feel that they can have opportunities closer to home."

Snow also said the money that already has been allocated for border issues is being used for border agents, National Guard deployments, radar emplacements, sensors, vehicle barriers and the like.

He responded to a question about the need for continued aid, including money and arms, to the Fatah organization in the Middle East. That group, Snow said, supports the idea of a stable two-state resolution to the conflict between Arab influences and the nation of Israel.

The other side, he said, is "getting supplies from other people."

That, Snow said, leaves the question: "Are those who are going to support a two-state solution, support a sound and secure Israel, are they going to be armed or are we going to sit idly by while others hostile to regional peace supply arms and rockets and personnel and trainers so that they can destabilize the region?"

"We think it's important to make sure that those who are supporting our aims can defend themselves," he said.

But Snow refused to comment about the Philadelphia city decision to throw the Boy Scouts out of a building they built and donated to the city, breaking a 79-year-old agreement to allow the scouting organization to use the facility.

"The president supports the Boy Scouts, but I can't get into a local dispute in Philadelphia," he said.

He also refused to answer questions about the case falsely alleging rape against Duke University students, calling it "salacious."

Snow is right that immigration is the second greatest threat and our President and Congress are the first. We have a President who is completely out of control and a congress that ignors the american people.

I agree with immigration being the second threat. The president has to be stopped with this nonsense. How can they say they will deoprt anyone who has overstayed a visa and ban them from the United States for life but say the same about illegal felons. This is nonsense.

Oh puleeeeze! We know that will never happen in a 3rd world country ruled by a thoroughly currupt and entrenched oligarchy. The NAU architects know damn well that the only way they can acheive economic congruency between Mexico and the U.S. to to drastically lower the wages and standard of living of American citizens.

Put your snake oil selling puppet back in it's trunk Bush.

I don't believe that this is true. Does Snow ever back this up with any evidence?
