Immigration bill costs McCain county chairman

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Senator John McCain's support of an immigration law overhaul branded as amnesty by Republicans has cost him a county chairman in South Carolina.

David Nix told McCain spokesman Adam Temple he was quitting as county chairman after getting an e-mail from Temple about McCain's debate performance Tuesday.

Temple had encouraged county chairmen to call radio shows to talk up McCain's performance.

Nix says he was resigning because he was far from McCain on what Nix calls the amnesty bill. He said McCain can't read the pulse of American citizens.

McCain's campaign confirmed the note's contents.
