Mother's deportation could have dire consequences for her son

BROWNSVILLE — Angel de Jesus Barrera will turn 3 next month. But at 22 pounds and 8 ounces, he is fighting for his life as his mother faces deportation later this month.

He was born with congenital craniofacial dysmorphism, an abnormality in fetus development, which left part of his cranium and face disfigured. Angel de Jesus looks more like a 1-year-old given his size and weight. He has a whole list of medical conditions, some of which include Down’s syndrome, scoliosis, mental retardation, seizure disorder and a serious case of glaucoma that recently resulted in the removal of his left eye.

Any infection could prove fatal, doctors say. Every medical and physical treatment is critical. But whether Angel de Jesus makes his next doctor’s appointment in Houston at the end of this month depends not only on his delicate state. It hinges on his mother’s immigration status.

Alma Lerma, his mother, crossed into Brownsville from Matamoros illegally in 1995 and has been fighting deportation since last year. This week, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official denied her request for permission to stay in the United States for another year based on her son’s medical case.

Lerma will have to voluntarily leave the country by April 20 or be forcibly removed. She has eight children, including Angel de Jesus, all of whom were born in the United States. Their future is now uncertain.

She is currently unemployed, and Medicaid covers all the medical expenses for her son.
And this is why she wants to stay here. Free, free, free. Eight anchor babies, unemployed and Medicaid. BTW, where's daddy to these 8 kids?

He is probably working somewhere for cash only. Baby making seems to be a big business for illegals, they are paid handsomely to have them.

DAMN IT!! Get this illegal invader the hell out of our country and take the anchor babies with you!

I've had it with this shit! I'm a college graduate (still paying for it), who's played by the rules and cannot even afford to have ONE kid. Yet my government wants to take even more of my hard earned dollars to support the irresponsible breeding habits ( and health care costs no doubt) of criminal invaders!

    When is enough enough?

Oh...one more thing! Where is an unemployed illegal invader, with 8 anchor babies, getting the money to pay for an attorney to fight deportation for a year?

Let me guess....WE'RE PAYING FOR THAT TOO!

She is unemployed so where is she getting the money to feed eight kids and provide shelter, pay utilities, buy clothes? Taxpayers, of course.

Shouldn't something be done about this lawyer who prolongs her illegal alien clients presence in the US? This lawyer should NOT be allowed to do this.

As for the client - deport her and her baby so they get off the taxpayer's credit card. Let Mexico pay for this baby.

It is irresponsible to give birth to EIGHT babies (yes grab the Dad by his short hairs and make him pay) you cannot afford whether you are an IA or a US citizen, then expect taxpayers to take care of them.

Instead of whining she should have used this years reprieve to make arrangments in Mexico to make sure her child will be properly cared for when she is deported.Mexico does pay for Medical Care of low income CITIZENS.

Lerma and her clan of 8 kds can go back to Mexico with her. Thats where they belong and where they should stay.

Why do taxpayers have to pay for prenatal care for illegal aliens? Why aren't they reported when they show up for this care? We wouldn't even have an anchor baby problem if these illegals were deported before they could give birth here! Something has to change.

She's 32 with EIGHT kids. That's disgraceful! She snuck in here in 1995 while 7 months pregnant with the first anchor. She says to escape an abusive relationship with her former hubby.

EIGHT kids in 12 years! When did she catch her breath? What a sorry excuse of a human being she is! Popping out kid after kid without a thought on how to support them! She should be deported, along with her anchors. Better yet, since we're already paying for the kids, she should be jailed and lose all rights to the kids. Where are the baby daddies??
