Some Farmers Moving Operations To Mexico

    UPDATED: 10:30 pm PST February 12, 2008

Some American farmers are moving south of the border, including farmers who used to own farmland in southern California.

An increase in illegal immigration raids and the high cost of legal labor has caused many to move their operations to Mexico.

Labor in Mexico generally costs a tenth of what it costs in the United States.

Americans now farm nearly 50,000 acres of land in Mexico and employ 11,000 people.

Farmers who decide to move from the United States to Mexico face challenges and obstacles such as a higher crime rate, the suspicions of locals and doubts in the United States about the safety of Mexican products.

But U.S. farmers in Mexico said they are good for the Mexican economy and provide cheaper products to the United States.

Suspicous as always. I wonder, is it Mom and Pop farmers moving to Mexico that this article is refering too? Or is it corporate farm operations? Will in 5 yrs or so will we hear it is necessary to open the borders wide for Mexican trucks? For the NAFTA Super Hwy? Or is this article written just to highten our awarness to the fact that migrants (legal or otherwise) pick our salads, and fruits that end up on our tables?

Perhaps it was written just for filler. Perhaps not.

Their probably ripping off the land of the small family Mexican farmers!!

These are the kind of greedy people that make all Americans look bad...like the greedy oil mongers.

Did they move their families to Mexico? Some how I doubt it!

Do these so call "American" farmers have dual citizenship now? Or were they Mexican/American farmers here with dual citizenship to begin with?

I too wonder about the dual citizenship because land ownership by 'foreigners' in Mexico is restricted. I don't know what the restrictions are.

The constitutional reforms and the new law provide the necessary legal framework to the principle of "Non-forfeit of Mexican Nationality", a long awaited demand be Mexicans living abroad. These Mexicans communities have long wished to preserve the rights the Mexican Constitution grants to its nationals and to maintain cultural and family ties with Mexico.

Mexicans living abroad will be free to travel and live in Mexico whenever they wish to do so, without having to comply with complicated formalities or apply for permits required for foreigners.

They will be able to buy land without any of the restrictions applied for foreigners. Likewise, none of the restrictions regarding inheritance and employment, concerning foreigners, can be applied.

    Appeal to Mexican President Calderon:
"Amnesty International has documented torture, arbitrary detention,
excessive use of force and the denial of due process," said Cox in a letter
to President Calderon ahead of his official visit Sunday through next
Thursday (Feb. 10-14). "The public security and criminal justice
institutions have too frequently been characterized as abusive, ineffective
    and lacking independence and transparency."
