Some Oregon schools adopting Mexican curriculum

Some Oregon high schools are adopting Mexico's public school curriculum to help educate Spanish-speaking students with textbooks, an online Web site, DVDs and CDs provided free by Mexico to teach math, science and even U.S. history.

I am disgusted with this. Any school district or school that does this, should have state and federal money stopped immediately. This whole MEXICAN IMMIGRATION is way out of control. Mexico is slowly taking back what they have always claimed is theirs, The United States of America. I am very saddened and disgusted by this.

Can anyone lay hands on the books they're using?

I am afraid that this is true. I would say that about 60% of Americans have become too complacent and have taken for granted all the great things we have in our country. They've become like the futuristic Eloi of H.G. Well's novel, "The Time Machine." H.G. Wells must have had a sense of prophesy when he wrote his novel because he describes this culture almost as to what we are experiencing today. The Eloi were extremely complacent and took everything for granted. The books in their library crumbled to dust because they were not read. They let the Morlocks do everything for them (their buildings, their housework, etc.) but failed to see that those Morlocks were only keeping the Eloi for harvest. The Eloi received their only intructions from a spinning disk that issued either audial or visual images. Doesn't that sound familiar? How many people read today and where do they get most of their information? From spinning disks - CD's and DVD's. Although the phonograph machine was invented in Wells' time, I still think he had a gift of prophecy and that he was trying to warn us what complacency would do to a civilization.

Perhaps the American Eloi should read the book and see for themselves how outright complacency and pandering to those who do not have our security in mind can lead to destruction. Oh, and if the American Eloi don't want to take the time to read the book or turn those heavy pages, they can always read it "Hollywood style" - they can get the DVD.

Mexican curriculum in Oregon schools stirs debate

11:05 AM PDT on Thursday, September 20, 2007

    Associated Press

Some Oregon high schools are adopting Mexico's public school curriculum to help educate Spanish-speaking students with textbooks, an online Web site, DVDs and CDs provided free by Mexico to teach math, science and even U.S. history.

The Oregon Department of Education and Mexico's Secretariat of Public Education are discussing aligning their curricula so courses will be valid in both countries.

Similar ventures are under way in Yakima, Wash., San Diego, Calif., and Austin, Texas.

Should the Mexican school curriculum be included in public schools to assist hispanic students?

    Yes

    No

"Students come to us with such complex issues," said Tim King, director of Clackamas Middle College and Clackamas Web Academy, where a virtual course using Mexico's learning materials got started this week.

"We've had to change in order to fit into each school scene, become more complex and open ourselves up to new situations."

Oregon officials say the approach is intended as a supplement to keep students learning in Spanish while also gaining English skills.

    BLOG: Mexican curriculum incites debate

Until now, Oregon school districts generally have relied on bilingual aides or used Spanish material different from the English material others are studying.

"That's not enough," said Patrick Burk, chief policy officer with the superintendent's office of the Oregon Department of Education. He said the idea is minimal disruption for immigrant Latinos.

"The availability of resources is astounding," said Burk, who flew to Mexico with Oregon curriculum officials in August to discuss making equivalency standards official. "We're able to serve the students so much better if we're working together."
