Son Of Immigrant Mom At Church May Start School
Rumors Say Elvira Arellano May Leave Church To Take Son To School

(CBS) CHICAGO One student who will be in the public eye on this first day for Chicago Public Schools students is the son of an illegal immigrant seeking asylum here.

Elvira Arellano took refuge last month at a church in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, but there are rumors she is planning to leave the church today and escort her 7-year-old son Saulito to school. Saulito was born in the United States and is a citizen.

Arellano and her son moved into the church on Aug. 15, the day she was to report to immigration authorities. Since that time, she has received both support and scorn from many leaders and groups.

Some officials have urged a letter-writing campaign to President Bush asking to allow Arellano to stay in the United States with her son. Immigration officers have said they will not enter the church to arrest Arellano, although they said earlier that they intended to apprehend Arellano at a time and place "of their choosing."

Aren't there some educational standards to be able to home school? This is a sick circus.

Let's call the Chicago Public schools " Attendance Improvement Initiative" at 773.553.1600

Ask for them to check if Saulito Arellano is in school (Mother's name is Elvira and he is 7 years old in case they have more than 1 student with this name).

Please advise them if not to send a truancy officer to 2716 W. Division St, Chicago, IL. They can't tell you if he's there or not but it's at least worth making them check.

Seems to me this would be a good time to pick her up, and if she leaves her son behind this will tell me all I need to know about this woman.
And should she choose not to send her son to school this is just one more law she is breaking and showing how little she really cares for him.
I feel sorry for the kid, he is a pawn in a game his mother is playing and someday he will have to pay the price for his mother's actions.
If she really loved him she would go back to Mexico with him and see that he goes to school, as long as he is also a American citizen he can always come back to work and support his mother when he is older.
She is allowed to take him with her, how much harder can life be in Mexico than living as a fugitive in a church be?

    Elvira's Son Going to School

Is he going to get an easy ride through the system because English is not his first language? How much will the language barrier cost the taxpayers as he will need extra help in school. We all know that mom won't be able to help with his homework. Is this kid even going to a regular public school or is he going to a bilingual one? If he is in a regular public school than kids may not like him and beat up on him especially the school bully. Is he going to need extra supervision to prevent that? Also will there be a police presence on his first few days walking to school due to the media circus? How much will that cost city tax payers? This is just plain wrong! Send them back ASAP!
