EL PASO -- The number of south-bound checks at international ports of entry has spiked since the Obama Administration made it a priority to crack down on gun smugglers arming dangerous drug cartels in Mexico.

Since mid-March hundreds of agents have searched cars leaving the U.S. for Mexico. They're looking for contraband: money, weapons and ammunition.

It's part of Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano's strategy to catch cash and guns headed to drug cartels in Mexico. "Basically, the secretary has mandated that we increase our tempo on our outbound operations, said Bill Molaski, the Border Patrol's El Paso Port Director.

To be effective, the searches need to be sporadic and have an element of surprise, Molaski said. If smugglers catch on they'll either avoid the bridge checkpoint or wait for the operation to end, he added.

Mexico welcomes the help but the number of weapons seized during the surge in outbound checks is small: just 16 since the beginning of the operations. In that same period, agents also discovered 3,800 rounds of ammunition in vehicles heading for Mexico.

Still, many believe that is only a drop in the bucket. The Mexican government suspects 2000 weapons make it across the border every day! ... 0&nav=AbC0
