South Dakota Senate panel OKs illegal immigration measure

South Dakota Senate panel OKs illegal immigration measure

    Rapid City Journal
    February 17, 2011
    PIERRE, SD

A South Dakota legislative panel has passed a bill that makes it a crime to employ illegal immigrants.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 4-3 Thursday to approve the measure, sponsored by Republican Sen. Craig Tieszen (TEE'-zin) of Rapid City. It now moves to the full Senate.

If the bill becomes law, anyone who knowingly employs an illegal immigrant will face a $1,000 fine for the first offense, with jail time for future offenses.

South Dakota joins other states in taking up bills this year that deal with illegal immigrants.

A bill that failed this week would have directed law enforcement officers to check a suspect's immigration status if they have reason to believe that person is here illegally.

This bill is just BS. It's already a crime. We need E-Verify.

Its still a step in the right direction while a small step it is a step. This also means while it doesn't force E-Verify after being caught the first time or having a neighboring business caught one will think more about doing so voluntarily vs the fine which is relatively small but how easy is it to run a business from behind bars.

We're still in what I would call the late stages of waking people up and right now its about doing as much as we can as broad as we can to get people to think before the 2012 elections which in 2013 is when the real game would begin.

the company who knowingly employees an illegal needs to also face a suspension of their business license for say 30-60 days per violation. Key is "Knowingly employing" If the illegal presents forged documents then the company should ge a warning first.
