Spanish police close down illegal work contracts network

A fake work contract scheme which defrauded social security of more than 600,000 euros and helped illegal immigrants stay in the country has been dismantled, Spanish police said Wednesday.

A Spanish woman and two African lawyers -- a Nigerian and a Guinean -- were arrested on suspicion of selling the fake work contracts to illegal immigrants, and to 22 others discovered with false documents.

The three suspects set up to front companies, which sold work "contracts" to immigrants at between 600 to 2,000 euros (950 to 3,174 dollars) each, according to a police statement.

The pretend contracts then allowed the immigrants to claim residence permits in Spain, and to apply for social security, principally unemployment and maternity benefits.

The immigrants paid out an additional monthly sum of 300 euros (476 dollars) to these fake companies, which the three suspects allegedly pocketed.

Police also arrested 21 Nigerians and a Gabonese in the capital Madrid and Toledo, in the centre of Spain.

Over two years, the social security fraud had reached 668,800 euros (1063 million dollars), police said.

Spain, which has been one of the hardest hit by illegal immigration among EU nations, has signed deals with seven west African countries in a bid to control the flow of migrants.
