Legal Challenge in the Works for Employer Sanctions Law
July 9th, 2007 @ 6:02am
by Mike Sauceda/KTAR
It's the toughest law in the land when it comes to punishing employers knowingly hiring illegal aliens, but a challenge is already in the works.
The law passed by the legislature would revoke the business license of any company found to be knowingly hiring illegal immigrants twice.
"The attorneys have been looking at this for awhile now anticipating some type of bill coming forward. So we'll know probably in the next few months what we look like in terms of legal grounds," said state Rep. Steve Gallardo Sunday evening on KTAR's The Jay Lawrence Show.
Gallardo said he's for employer sanctions. "I believe there should be some type of employer sanctions. I believe we should hold businesses accountable. But we don't do it from the state level. I think you do it from a federal level.
If the legal challenge is not successful, the tough new law will go into effect January 1.
