Specter: better move ahead on immigration reform!"
GOP SUFFERS ALIEN JITTERS
By GEOFF EARLE
September 4, 2006 -- WASHINGTON - Republicans could lose control of Congress if they fail to pass a stalled immigration bill this fall, Sen. Arlen Specter warned.
Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Specter (R-Pa.), the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, said, "If we Republicans want to retain control of the House for sure, you'd better move ahead on immigration reform."
President Bush has made immigration reform a top priority, but GOP leaders haven't been able to reconcile the more "comprehensive" Senate bill and its guest-worker program with a get-tough House version focused on enforcement.
Specter said his first phone call tomorrow, when Congress is back in session, will be to House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.), urging him to work out a deal.
