Reid Threatens Filibuster on Immigration

As the Senate prepares to tackle the most sweeping immigration reforms in years, a top Democrat vowed Wednesday to do everything in his power, including filibuster, to thwart Majority Leader Bill Frist's proposed overhaul.

Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he would "use every procedural means at my disposal" to prevent Frist from bypassing the Judiciary Committee. Frist, R-Tenn., has made clear the Senate will take up his proposal next week if the 18-member committee fails to complete a broader bill.



"If Leader Frist brings a bill to the floor that does not have the approval of the Judiciary Committee, it will not get out of the Senate," Reid told reporters at the San Ysidro border crossing, a few steps from Tijuana, Mexico.

Bob Stevenson, a spokesman for Frist, did not immediately respond to a call Wednesday evening.

Reid said the overhaul must include heightened border enforcement, a "guest worker" program and a "path to citizenship" for the estimated 11 million people in the United States illegally. He called legislation by Sens. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and John McCain, R- Ariz., a "good place to start."

President Bush, in a State of the Union address two years ago, urged Congress to create a worker program under which participants could gain legal status for a specific time and then be required to return home. It would not provide an automatic path to citizenship.

Frist unveiled a bill last week that sidesteps the question of temporary work permits. It would tighten borders, punish employers who hire illegal immigrants and provide more visas.

I just sent my email to this traitor and I mentioned that I hope we are no kin(I'm a Reid) because I'd hate to be related to anyone who goes against the wishes of the LEGAL American citizens and REWARDS the law breaking illegals. Believe me, I gave him hell, but I seriously doubt he will even read any of his mail about this issue, he KNOWS that we don't want this amnesty

This is ALL A FLIPPING DANCE! Frist is planning a bait and switch, has already stated he will WITHDRAW his bill if one comes out of the judiciary committee. The Republican Party in the Senate is ready to sell it's soul and the Middle Class to pergatory to win the Latino vote as they believe it the only way they will maintain their majority in Washington, DC...

Arlen Spincter's bill will make it out of committee complete with Amnesty, a guest worker program, and NO REAL BORDER SECURITY, or penalties for those companies hiring illegals, and in the name of winning the Latino voting block here in America, and all we are witnessing now is some great kabuke (sp?) dance. Why do you think Hilliary went on the warpath today on national TV...not because she REALLY CARES about illegal aliens and their plight, but because she wants a part of the Latino pie when she runs for president in 2008...her re-election to the Senate is already a slam dunk with the Republicans not even being able to find a reputable canidate to run against her here in New York. Frist also is trying to posture to the camera's, but has also made his deal with the devil as he contemplate his own chances for a run at the White House. This whole illegal alien debacle is NOT ABOUT AMERICANS, or the beaten and down troddened middle class, it's about politics, poll numbers and controlling voter blocks...in this case the Latino block that the Republican party badly wants to offset the black vote that all but belongs to the Democratic Party.

Tell you what Bush...give my wife and I every penny back we ever put into the Social Security with basic pass book interest (including those contributions made on our behalf), wave any penalties on our 401K and let us withdraw our funds, and I'll leave this land, since you and yours all are letting me know I no longer have a place here, am no longer one who's interest are represented by government in any single way.

This is so strange. I'm beginning to wonder if it's not a Bush-Kennedy-McCain-Reid scam. Maybe it's meant to get US to go running to a lesser guest worker program. Seriously. This is going to get ugly.

It is already UGLY...even worse, if the Middle Class would put as much effort into this issue as they have put into banning smoking, our borders would already be secure. If the Christian Right who professes a deep belief in preserving family were to be as involved in this as they are in the fight to outlaw abortion, this would already be decided. Sadly, both these massive groups of American citizens have their eyes on the wrong basket, just like their government hoped they would.

I was wondering the same thing, Legal, and in my email to Reid, here's what I said: "We know now that you, McCain, Kennedy, and our President are just totally ignoring the wishes of the LEGAL American citizens. We are not stupid like you think we are, we know that this is nothing more than amnesty for the 20 to 40 millon illegals here now(not 11 millon like some say, we are not stupid about that either). We are not gonna lay down and take this. This is going to be like the Dubai Ports deal, we are gonna be heard, LOUD AND CLEAR on this issue!"

Legal....when you show me 100,000 American citizens with enough guts, fortitude and balls to march on Washington, DC and hold a peaceful sit in on the floor of the Senate then I'll believe you....trust me, anything short of that is NOT going to stop this tragedy from occuring.
