Students should prove citizenship

Let's not be hasty in raising taxes and spending millions of dollars because of school overcrowding. As recent articles by the Post-Bulletin have shown, Rochester has a problem with illegal aliens. With the current pressure by the feds to remove the illegals, I assume we will see a decrease in enrollment and a freeing up of desk space for our youngest citizens in the near future.

The school district could take the initiative right now by requiring proof of each student's American citizenship for this 07-08 school year, thereby relieving the pressure immediately and not wait for the return migration of the illegals to their home country. This policy enacted today would provide the environment we want for the children by decreasing class size and improve the student-to-teacher ratio now.

Raising taxes in the future may be required next, but we can take this step first by spending taxpayer money to educate American children only, not the children of illegal foreign nationals. Raising taxes should be the very last step considered.
