    State police: ‘Saturation sweep’ successful
    Sunday, 02 July 2006
Law enforcement agencies involved in Friday’s “saturation sweep” have termed it a success.

State police at Hazleton said the sweep conducted Friday night into Saturday in Hazleton and West Hazleton yielded several arrests and “valuable law enforcement intelligence.”

The U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained two people whom it called “deported felons.” However, their names have not yet been released.

The Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit found drugs during a traffic stop and assisted in apprehending a suspect who fled from a state parole officer, according to state police. County probation and parole officers cited several defendants for violations of supervision.

In addition, Hazleton police made several drug arrests and gathered information that will aid ongoing and future investigations. City police confiscated a tray of suspected marijuana plants and two pot pipes.
And the state Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement visited several establishments and was able to identify violations for future investigations, state police said.

Authorities made several stops in the area, beginning at an apartment building on North Wyoming Street. That was followed by visits to an apartment building at Wyoming and Green streets, a nearby bar, a house near Church and Second streets and a house near Alter and 17th streets.
When questioned Friday night, ICE agents said there was no particular reason for the raid.

However, both Mayor Lou Barletta and Superior Court Justice Correale Stevens, a Hazleton native, have been asking the agency to open an office in northeastern Pennsylvania, and most especially in Hazleton.
The action also comes two weeks after Barletta proposed, and city council approved on first reading, an ordinance that would fine landlords who rent to illegals and withdraw the privilege of doing business within or with the city for five years for firms that hire illegals. It also declares English the city’s official language.

The proposal has attracted national attention.

I sure hope that Mayor Barletta doesn't get a swelled head over all this publicity but - damn - he's doing a bang up job.

    GO GET EM, MAYOR!!!
