Statements from the Immigration Reform Caucus Aug. 3, 2007

    STATEMENT BY CONGRESSMAN BILBRAY
    August 3, 2007

washington d.c. — Congressman Brian Bilbray (R-CA), Chairman of the Immigration Reform Caucus, released the following statement this morning in response to last night’s vote on a measure that would have added language to the FY 2008 Agriculture spending bill to prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving taxpayer-funded Federal benefits:

“I think last night sent a clear message to the American people that there are people in this town who are willing to break rules and utilize extraordinary maneuvers just so that illegal immigrants can receive taxpayer-funded benefits. This incident just underscores the reasons why the American people have no faith in Washington to do the right thing when it comes to addressing illegal immigration. Anyone who thought they could go home and not hear from their constituents about the illegal immigration issue will have a long, hot, August recess.â€

    Statement by Congressman Blackburn

    Statement by Congressman Blackburn
    August 3, 2007

washington d.c. — Early this morning House Democrats displayed an unprecedented abuse of power by trying to reverse a recorded vote on the House floor. During consideration of the Motion to Recommit H.R. 3161, legislation to fund FY 2008 Agriculture Appropriations, Republicans attempted to add language to the bill prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving taxpayer-funded Federal benefits. Yet the House Democrat Leadership reversed the vote following an apparent Republican victory.

In response to the event Congressman Blackburn issued this statement today:

"On late Thursday night the Liberal Leadership of this Congress dictated to the American people that it is more important to pay, feed, and shelter illegal immigrants with taxpayer money than it is for the Voice of the People to be heard. They have now made their priorities known by rigging the vote to prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving Federal benefits. In so doing, the Liberal Leadership chose to place benefits for illegal immigrants above the needs of the American taxpayer.

"Their action was a historic and unprecedented stand against our system of representative democracy that puts American freedom and national security at risk."

REP. BROWN-WAITE: "WHY I WALKED OFF THE HOUSE FLOOR LAST NIGHT"
    August 3, 2007

washington d.c. — U.S. Representative Ginny Brown-Waite (FL-05) today released the following statement about unprecedented Democrat actions on the floor of the House last night. The Majority's power-grab shut out of legislative debate and decision making Members of both parties who believe we should not give taxpayer funded benefits to illegal immigrants. Rep. Brown-Waite joined virtually all the Republicans in boycotting the final vote on the Agriculture Appropriations bill in protest of Tammany Hall style vote fixing.

"This body is named the people's House for good reason. We were elected to represent the people, not partisan political leaders here in Washington, D.C. Any time the majority, at the whim of unnamed political leaders, ignores the will of the body and arbitrarily overturns a vote of the House, it deserves to have Members walk out of the chamber.

"The House vote last night was clear; no money will be spent on illegal immigrants. Rather than accept the will of the House, Democrat leadership broke more than 200 years of precedent and allowed Members to change votes after the measure had passed by 215 to 213, including at least 14 Democrats who voted to do the right thing, purely to defeat the clear will of a majority of this body. This action is worthy of Fidel Castro or Joseph Stalin, not the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

"Along with my Republican colleagues, I walked out of the chamber to protest the outrageous behavior of the Democrat majority. Their desire to give benefits to illegal immigrants at the expense of law-abiding Americans is so strong that the Pelosi Power Police corrupted the vote process. I guess if things don't go their way, the new Democrat majority just throws the Constitution out the window and makes the rules up as they go along."

The vote in question was a motion to recommit that would have prohibited funds in the agricultural appropriations bill going to illegal immigrants. At the time when the vote had been closed by the Speaker Pro Tempore, the Republican motion had the votes needed to pass. After the vote was closed, the Democrat majority allowed solely Democrat Members to change their votes and alter the outcome of the vote. These unprecedented controlled vote switches showed the Party in control's true colors.

This pattern of abusive behavior was also exhibited earlier this week when Democrat leaders passed legislation to cut nearly $200 billion in Medicare funds and that included language allowing illegal immigrants to receive taxpayer funded health care benefits.

"Democrats led the fight to cut $194 billion in Medicare funds for our nation's seniors this week, while at the same time giving children of illegal immigrants health care benefits. Talk about being out of touch with mainstream America. When the Democrat led Congress hands out benefits to illegal immigrants at the expense of our most vulnerable population, our senior citizens, that is a sad commentary indeed on the state of affairs in Washington, D.C."

Now I am starting to understand. So the Dems held the voting open only for Dems to change their votes to cause the measure to fail which results in illegals getting the money right?

How screwed up is our government?????
Immigration reform should reflect a commitment to enforcement, not reward those who blatantly break the rules. - Rep Dan Boren D-Ok

They held the vote open after the gavel came down for demacrates to change their vote as they realized the bill had been defeated. Rules in the House and Senate are once the gavel comes down the vote is over, and the president of the House also had already stated the bill had been defeated. NO FOOD STAMPS AND HOUSEING TO ILLEGALS!!!!

You know, I’ve been thinking about this all afternoon.
Now I know they lied, I know they Broke rules, but I guess what bothers me the most of all is that over a hundred people actually voted to give any tax payers money to Criminal immigrants.
